Unit 6.2A Assignment

On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.

Description of Site:

Verso is a free platform for teachers to use to create flipped lessons. First, teachers create an account either through the website or through the Verso app. Then, they can then have their students enroll in a class through a class code. Once a class or classes are created, a teacher can add content by recording media directly through the app, or by adding videos or texts from google drive, the internet, and/or youtube. Teachers can assign a certain number of responses to be added by the students once the student has finished the flip. One interesting feature is that students cannot see other responses until posting their own responses. Once they post responses, students can “like” and respond to the responses of other students, which makes the tool somewhat collaborative.
When students access the site, they see all of the “flips” assigned by the teacher and after submitting their own responses they see their classmates responses which appear as anonymous posts. The teacher sees student responses by name and can also track each student’s progress through the teacher dashboard page. The teacher can also “hide” responses by students that are deemed inappropriate or off task.
This web tool is definitely appropriate for classroom use when teachers are attempting to create flipped lessons because it is ad free and can be monitored closely by teachers. It also allows teachers to use strong questioning techniques even when they are not in the classroom with their students. As this requires a high level of student independence and motivation, I think it is best suited for middle or high school students in any content area.

Educational Uses of Site

This tool is designed and is best suited for teachers who want to "flip"their classroom or even just a particular lesson. It provides an easy platform for teachers to create or upload content and questions and it allows students to complete a flipped lesson at home but still benefit from teacher and peer feedback. Because it is the individual teacher who chooses the content and questions, it could be used in any discipline if the teacher wanted to try the flipped classroom model.

Review of Site

I first used this site during a flipped professional development session created by our district technology coach as a student. The student view is designed to look clean and clear and is easy to access and use. The website prompts you through the “flip” and the response process and I enjoyed seeing the responses of my peers and being able to “like” the ones I found interesting. I think that the students would enjoy that process, too. As a teacher, I think this is a great tool for flipping a lesson. It is easy to use and it links right to google drive and youtube, which is a big plus for me. Also, I like that I can see how my students are progressing through the lesson and how they have responded to the discussion questions as they go. This really helps knowing which students are mastering material, which students need extra support, and which students simply aren’t attempting the flipped material before class even starts. Overall, this is a Web 2.0 tools I will continue to explore and implement in my classroom.
